Every truck and trailer part on your list carries a manufacturer-specific OEM number and often several “equivalent” numbers from other brands as well. Cross referencing is the process of matching those numbers to confirm you are ordering the exact right part, not a look-alike. Get it wrong and you pay for shipping twice; get it right and sourcing becomes fast and predictable. Here is how the process actually works.

Why the same part has multiple numbers

A single physical component often carries different reference numbers depending on who assigned it: the original systems manufacturer (WABCO, BPW, Raufoss, Knorr Bremse), the vehicle OEM that fitted it at the factory (Mercedes Benz, Scania, MAN, Volvo, DAF), and sometimes the trailer builder (Schmitz Cargobull, Krone, Kögel, Schwarzmüller). 4. When in doubt, send the number and a photo. A stamped number plus a photo of the part lets a supplier confirm the match before you commit to an order.

Common cross reference mistakes

• Trusting a single third party listing without checking the manufacturer's own catalogue
• Matching on part family (e.g. “a WABCO solenoid valve”) rather than the exact variant
• Ignoring superseded numbers manufacturers periodically replace a part number with a newer one; ordering the old number can still be correct, but it helps to know
• Assuming left/right, or voltage variants, are interchangeable when they are not
